Maritime tussac formation, confined to coastal regions and usually under 200m above sea level, once fringed the East and West Falklands mainland coasts. It is now mostly confined to small offshore islands due to the introduction of livestock and probably a lot of it was destroyed by sealers burning it to flush out sea-lions in the 17 and 1800's. Where the tussac has been removed sometimes sand dunes have resulted. It is being replanted by Falkland Conservation in some areas. Other plants may grow between the pedestals where the tussac peat has eroded to give bare surfaces.
